Dental Implants in Charlotte, NC - Permanent Teeth, Expert Care
Missing one or more teeth affects more than your smile. It changes how you eat, how you speak, and how you feel about yourself. Over time it can accelerate bone loss in your jaw, shift neighboring teeth, and alter your facial structure. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that addresses all of these consequences at the root level, replacing both the visible crown and the underlying tooth root with a permanent titanium post that fuses directly with your jawbone.
At Charlotte Dental Arts, every implant procedure is placed and restored under one roof by Dr. Edwin Porter, DDS, DICOI, FAGD, a Charlotte native with over 25 years of implant experience and a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (DICOI). The DICOI is an implant-specific credential held by a small fraction of general dentists. It signals training and clinical examination at the level of a dedicated implant specialist. No referrals to an outside oral surgeon. No split care between providers. Your consultation, surgery, and final restoration all happen here, with the same doctor guiding every step. According to the American Dental Association, long-term research shows dental implants achieve success rates above 95% over decades, making them the most predictable tooth replacement available.
How Dental Implants Work
A dental implant replicates the full structure of a natural tooth using three components: a titanium post placed surgically into your jawbone, an abutment connector, and a custom crown, bridge, or prosthesis on top. The titanium post undergoes osseointegration, bonding directly with your bone over a healing period of three or more months and creating a permanent, stable anchor that functions exactly like a natural root.
This root-level foundation is what separates implants from every other replacement option. Dental bridges require filing down adjacent healthy teeth for support. Dentures rest on the gum surface and provide no stimulation to the jawbone, accelerating bone loss over time. Implants preserve and actively stimulate the jaw, maintaining both function and facial structure for the long term.
Dr. Porter uses CBCT cone beam imaging and fully guided surgical techniques for every implant case, mapping your implant position in precise 3D before surgery begins and executing it with a surgical guide accurate to the millimeter. CEREC same-day crown technology allows final restorations to be milled and seated in-house, often in a single visit.

Your Dental Implant Treatment Process
Every implant case at Charlotte Dental Arts follows a structured, transparent process. Here is what to expect from your first appointment through your final restoration.
Step 1: Consultation and Imaging. We review your dental and medical history, take digital x-rays, and perform a full CBCT cone beam scan to assess bone density, nerve locations, and optimal implant positioning. A custom treatment plan is created before you leave. Take our implant candidacy quiz to see if implants may be right for your situation.
Step 2: Preparatory Procedures (if needed). Some patients require a tooth extraction or bone graft before implant placement. We perform these procedures in-house and allow appropriate healing time before moving to surgery.
Step 3: Implant Placement Surgery. Using a computer-generated surgical guide, Dr. Porter places your titanium implant post with guided precision. You will be comfortable under sedation. Most patients report the procedure is far less involved than expected. In many cases a temporary crown is placed the same day so you leave with a functional tooth.
Step 4: Healing and Osseointegration. Over the next three to six months your implant fuses with the surrounding bone. Temporary teeth are in place during this period so you can eat and function comfortably while healing progresses.
Step 5: Final Restoration. Once osseointegration is confirmed, your permanent crown, bridge, or prosthesis is fabricated, often same-day using our in-house CEREC system, and seated. Your implant is now complete and indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most adults with one or more missing teeth are candidates for dental implants. You are likely a good candidate if you have adequate jawbone density to support the implant post, healthy gum tissue, and no uncontrolled systemic conditions such as unmanaged diabetes that would impair healing.
You may still be a candidate even if you have experienced bone loss. Bone grafting is a routine procedure performed in-house at Charlotte Dental Arts that rebuilds lost bone density and creates the foundation needed for successful implant placement. A sinus lift may be recommended for bone loss in the upper jaw. These preparatory procedures extend the overall timeline but do not diminish implant outcomes.
The best way to determine candidacy is a CBCT scan and consultation with Dr. Porter. Take our implant candidacy quiz or call (704) 397-4332 to schedule your free consultation.
